Large Hadron Collider Launch
Aug 03, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Ready
In 2008, CERN will take particle physics research into the 21st century with the commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Bound to set milestones in high energy physics, the aim of the LHC is as grand as the machine – to uncover the mysteries of matter itself. Why does matter have mass? Why is matter preferred over antimatter? How did the universe we live in today evolve ?

Set

If you would like to be part of the LHC launch activities, marking the start of a new era destined to re-write our understanding of the universe, you can register your interest to attend this invitation only event by sending an email to:

Welcome to the Melbourne University WARP Home

Welcome to the Melbourne University Physics Promotion, Education and Teaching Home Page, and the online presence of WARP.

Presenting physics in an exciting and informative way is the aim of this highly popular program. The program consists of a fascinating production by outstanding presenters led by Dr Rassool of the School of Physics, of carefully selected demonstrations of basic physics phenomena. There are two forms of the program: visits to individual schools and a theatre production that includes a fascinating laser show. The events are available to schools both in the metropolitan area and in country areas

Why not arrange for your school (yrs 5-8) to be part of the 2008 MUPPETS program. To arrange a visit, please Contact Us. We are currently visiting schools in the Benalla district, and are hosting schools from around Melbourne in our very own Lyle Theatre. Check out Upcoming Performances for more details!

Teachers, feel free to download our worksheets for use in class, and please don't hesitate to contact us to find out more.

We are really grateful for the generous support of Colonial Foundation. Their financial support allows us to continue to provide all of our services at no charge. So far, we have performed 100s of shows to more than 15,000 students - and they all know that Science can be Fun! Thank you to all of the people who helped make this support come through.

Physics Gymnasium
Jan 19, 2007 at 09:16 AM

All Physics and Science Teachers:

· Do you have years 10, 11 & 12 students who are interested in physics?

· Do you have some students who need more stimulation or who need to broaden their horizons?

· Do your students need the stimulation to be gained from meeting with their peers from other schools?

· Would you like your students to meet leading physicists and physics teachers?

If the answer to any of these questions is YES then you may care to invite some of your students to participate in the Physics Gymnasium.

The School of Physics' Physics Gymnasium is a program for highly interested students in Years 9-12 currently undertaking Secondary School physics and science. The program brings together emminent physicists at both the University and industry to give hour long lectures on a variety of topics. It is held in the Laby lecture theatre in the School of Physics at the University on a monthly basis. Please click HERE for a map.

Program for 2008:

Lectures will be on a Wednesday and start at 5.30pm, with drinks and nibbles from 5.15pm.

The next lecture will take place on 13 August 2008.  The details are as follows:

News from the Large Hadron Collider

by Professor Geoffrey Taylor

Slides from the lecture by Professor David Jamieson

Black and White Slides
Colour Slides

The details of the final lecture on 22 October 2008 are:

Quantum reality – its uncertainty is not what it used to be

by Professor Lloyd Hollenberg

Please register on the Bulletin Board your interest in coming to any of the lectures. This is a great way to keep informed with any changes, and also talk to fellow Gymmers about physics and science in general.
